The World Featherweight Championship, "For Honor and Pride," between Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales will take place Saturday, June 22 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Bob Arum, president of Top Rank, and John Jackson, president of Forum Boxing, made the announcement earlier today.
Barrera sustained a rib injury while sparring at his training camp in Big Bear, Calif., thus causing the postponement from Saturday, March 2.
Barrera and Morales each declared victory in their first epic battle, Feb. 19, 2000, in Las Vegas. However, it was Morales who had his hand raised as winner by split-decision in Ring Magazine's 2000 "Fight of the Year," which also awarded Round Five as the "Round of the Year." Morales was ahead 115-112, 114-113 on two cards while Barrera was ahead 114-113 on the third.
Barrera has a record of 54-3 with 39 knockouts. He is from Mexico City, Mexico. Morales, 41-0 with 31 knockouts, is the current WBC featherweight champion and is from Tijuana.
