Poetry & Art

Ant Black and Readers Ensemble II featured artists at Museum of the Living Artist quarterly event

The Museum of the Living Artist invites writers and artists to present their visual and written/spoken work at Poetry and Art on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006. The quarterly event at the San Diego Art Institute will feature special guest performers Ant Black, spoken word poet, and The Readers Ensemble II, an arts collective including Joyce Nower, Seretta Martin, Stephanie Packard, Kiersten Emers-on and Victoria Shelby.

Ant Black is winner of the San Diego Poetry Slam, La Paloma Slam and Full Moon Poetry Slam. He infuses his spoken word performances with rock, hip hop, R&B and Polynesian dancing. Sandiego.com’s Janice Steinberg called Ant Black “fresh and immensely likable” in a review of his recent performance at Sushi’s New Wave Showcase.

The Readers Ensemble II will present “The Magritte Series,” poems by Kathleen Fraser, based upon selected paintings by surrealist artist Renee Magritte. The Readers Ensemble II will be led by writer and producer Joyce Nower, a former lecturer at San Diego State University. Nower has published several books of poetry and currently writes a bimonthly column for The Alsop Review, an online literary magazine.

Poetry & Art takes place in the 10,000-square-foot San Diego Art Institute at Balboa Park and includes live music and food. The event is open to the public and audience members can participate or simply enjoy the show. Cost is $5. Open mic signups start at 6 p.m., and the event runs 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
