Investigators with the California Department of Insurance (CDI) Criminal Investigations Branch arrested a local insurance agent last week for selling bogus insurance policies.
Ronald Prasky, 30, owner of Border Pacific Insurance Services, was arrested and booked into San Diego County Jail. Bail was set at $400,000. Mr. Prasky's wife, Mylena Munguia Prasky, 38, was also arrested along with Antonio Lopez, 32, who served as manager of Border Pacific Insurance Services. All of the defendants were charged with multiple felony counts, including conspiracy, insurance fraud and grand theft. The San Diego District Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case.
According to CDI Investigators, Mr. Prasky allegedly sold hundreds of fraudulent insurance policies to unsuspecting consumers, primarily in the Hispanic community. Prasky collected premiums and never submitted them to insurance carriers, keeping the money for himself. Prasky's illegal activities left hundreds of victims unknowingly without valid automobile liability coverage and exposing California drivers to uninsured motorists.
The CDI urges consumers to verify the licensing status of all persons and entities they contemplate doing business with by contacting the CDI Consumer Hotline at (800) 927-HELP or on the Department website at www.insurance.ca.gov.
