Community Members Volunteer to Make 2002 Super Bowl Special For Vietnam Veteran

Angel Silva Sanchez, a Vietnam War Veteran and a lifetime National City resident, will have a special Super Bowl this year. His home has been selected for renovation by Christmas in July, a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration, rehabilitation, and/or modification of National City homes. Christmas in July annually selects a home to work on at Super Bowl time.

Over 40 volunteers will be working at the Sanchez home located at 33 Mesa Avenue in National City. The home was in so need of repairs that San-chez' insurance company would not reinstate his policy for his home and he feared losing his home due to the lack of protection.

Christmas in July's mission is to repair, rehabilitate, and/or modify homes in National City. It targets low-income home-owners who are elderly, disabled, and/or families with children. It's done so they can continue to live with dignity, independence, and safety.

When Sanchez came to Christmas in July in late August 2001 for assistance, Christmas in July was wrapping up its annual mid-summer effort that included work on 20 homes. Although Christmas in July was unable to make a commitment at that time, it did commit to using its resources to help him. Sanchez was referred to the Metropolitan Areas Advisory Committee (MAAC Project) which committed to taking care of all his weathering needs.

In early January, the Christmas in July Board of Directors decided to take the Sanchez home under its wing. A variety of work will be performed at his home, including painting of the exterior, plumbing, electrical, lawn work, and trash removal.

Christmas in July National City is an affiliate of Rebuilding Together, the leading national volunteer organization working to restore housing in communities. Volunteers from all walks of life will come together in an effort to restore the safety and dignity of Mr. Silva Sanchez.
