SACRAMENTO, 3 de febrero de 2000—El Secretario de Estado de Asuntos de Veteranos (Veterans Affairs) Tomas Alvarado anunció hoy que la Universidad de California (UC) honrará a los veteranos por su servicio y sacrificio a la nación con la designación del Día del Veterano (Veterans Day), el 11 de noviembre, como uno de sus días feriados oficiales que comenzará a ponerse en práctica este año.

Carmen Lomas Garza, illustrator and author of "Magic Windows: Cut-paper Art and Stories," published by Children's Book Press, and Alma Flor Ada, author of "Under the Royal Palms. A Childhood in Cuba," published by Atheneum Books, are the 2000 winners of the Pura Belpré Awards honoring Latino writers and illustrators whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in a children's book.

Violence in Children Alarmingly Common
Violence in children and adolescents is proving to be both alarmingly common and expensive. In a recent Center for Disease Control and Prevention survey, over 25% of adolescents in San Diego Unified School District reported they have considered suicide within the last year and nearly 3% made attempts that required hospitalization.

César Chávez Legacy Betrayed

Democratic State Senate leadership has tainted the memory of what remains of the Chávez legacy. In their rush to push for a bill to create a paid state holiday honoring César Chávez, who led the struggle to bring justice to the farm workers of California, created a bill that will burden, with additional millions of dollars in taxes, the very same people for whom he devoted his life to; the underpaid, overworked, working class of this state be they farm workers, unskilled workers, service industry workers, or migrant workers.

Famed Barela Carvings Shown at Museum of Man
Acclaimed Exhibit Comes to San Diego Feb. 19
An exhibition of 40 religious, secular and abstract woodcarvings by renowned Hispanic artist Patrocinio Barela are part of a national tour that will have its only California stop at the San Diego Museum of Man from Feb. 19 to May 14, 2000.

San Diego's Black Pioneers
February is Black History Month
The African American Museum of Fine Arts (AAMFA) is proud to present its Black History month exhibition, "San Diego's Black Pioneers", at the Lyceum Theatre located in the Horton Plaza from February 2-29, 2000. On Friday, February 11, 2000, from 5:00-7:30, an Opening Reception features a slide show presentation by Larry Malone at 6:45 p.m.

Ituri Forest: Una Nueva y Misteriosa Selva Africana en el Corazón del
Mundialmente Famoso San Diego Zoo

Esta primavera, quienes visiten el San Diego Zoo tendrán la oportunidad de recorrer una de las selvas tropicales más misteriosas de Africa. Se trata del debut de la nueva exhibición Ituri Forest, en donde los hipopótamos nadan con gracia bajo el agua mientras los búfalos del monte se revuelcan en el lodo y los monos saltan de árbol en árbol.
