Open Letter to the Community

Parental Support of UCSD Charter School at Gompers Middle School

An opportunity of a lifetime is being offered to the Gompers Middle School community and the residents of San Diego Unified School District, District E by UCSD. UCSD, which is listed as one of the top 25 universities in America is proposing to open a charter school at Gompers.

Gompers is now in its 4th year of program improvement under the No Child Left Behind Act. This act requires schools that are in year 4 of Program Improvement to radically restructure their entire educational program.

UCSD started a charter school named Pruess, on its campus approximately six years ago, the planning for the charter however started around 10 years ago. The student body was recruited from socially and economically depressed neighborhoods in the city of San Diego. It is a 6th through 12th grade program. Pruess’ first class graduated last spring and the results were phenomenal, approximately 90 percent of the students started 4 year colleges this year around the country. The remaining graduates have all enrolled in local 2 year community colleges and plan to transfer to the 4 year colleges. The students at Preuss as a whole maintain a 3.8 grade point average.

In order for this union of UCSD and the Gompers community to happen, 50 percent of the parents of Gompers students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades and parents who reside within the boundaries of Gompers Middle School with children in those grades would seriously consider sending their child to Gompers if UCSD started a charter school there, must read the charter proposal and sign a document supporting the charter school by January 3, 2005.

There is not a lot of time to accomplish this task, especially with the Christmas and New Years holidays here and the fact that the entire SDUSD system is on furlough for the next two weeks.

The Gompers staff and parents have embarked on an ambitious and aggressive drive to sign as many parents as they can by January 3, 2005. Below is a list of the following events planned to gather more signatures than required:

1. Parents of the Workgroup will be informing other parents about the charter during winter break.

2. Charter Signup Pizza Dinner at Gompers on December 29, 2004 at 6:00 pm

3. All Day Petition Drive at Gompers on January 3, 2005 from 7:30 am until 7:30 pm in the auditorium.
