EL CAJON - The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District has received a commendation from the California Community Colleges Board of Governors for its partnership with UCSD and the Grossmont Union High School District to create UniversityLink.
The program launched last spring guarantees admission to UCSD to students who sign the agreement and complete a minimum of 60 transferable units at either Grossmont or Cuyamaca College, maintain a 2.8 grade point average and meet UC subject eligibility. In the first two months of the program, nearly 100 community college students had signed UniversityLink contracts and administrators say the high school response has been equally as strong.
In addition to guaranteed admission to UCSD as juniors, students in the program are provided services such as individual counseling, campus tours and transfer success workshops to ensure they stay on track to go to UCSD. Students sign the UniversityLink contract during their senior year of high school or shortly after graduation.
The UniversityLink program has been implemented at other individual campuses, but not to extent that it has been in the East County.
"Grossmont-Cuyamaca's program is unique in that it is a comprehensive districtwide effort that includes all of the 11 high schools and both of the community colleges in the East San Diego region in one comprehensive agreement," states the commendation by state Chancellor Thomas J. Nussbaum at the Nov. 13-14 meeting of the Board of Governors.
Chancellor Omero Suarez said that community college transfer students make up one-third of UC graduating classes, so the partnering of the two school systems and the Grossmont Union High School District makes a lot of sense.
"The UniversityLink program is extremely important for East County students because it links academic opportunity with streamlined assistance and financial savings," Suarez said. "We are excited about the doors that are opened with this program."
