Southwestern College Names Mike Pompa Head Football Coach

Chula Vista — Southwestern College’s Physical Education Professor Mike Pompa got an early birthday and Christmas present. Pompa, who turns 58 December 23, has been appointed SWC’s new Head Football Coach. The appointment becomes official starting spring term 2005.

“It’s going to be a big challenge,” said Pompa, who’s taught at Southwestern College for more than 30 years and is also a community college graduate. Pompa graduated from Chaffey Community College before going on to earn a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Physical Education from San Diego State University.

Coaching the Southwestern College (SWC) Jaguars is not a new challenge for Pompa. He was SWC’s Head Football Coach from 1995-2001. Additionally, Pompa, has coached Track and Field, Men’s and Women’s Swimming, and Men’s Soccer.

“I am looking forward to working with the kids and hopefully we’ll have a good season,” added Pompa, a San Diego native who now lives in Bonita.

“The entire College is happy to see him back doing something he is so passionate about,” said Bruce Turner, Dean of the School of Health, Exercise Science, and Athletics. “We’re sure he’ll do great. We thank him for stepping up to the challenge and wish him good luck.”
