Free Holiday at Bazaar del Mundo

With puppets, carolers and bands highlighting the sights and sounds of the season, visitors of all ages to the Bazaar del Mundo will find something to delight and entertain them. A free holiday entertainment tradition continues with a variety of music, singing and performances at Old Town San Diego's Bazaar del Mundo throughout the month of December. All acts are free. The line-up includes: Sounds of Christmas, Harpist, Dec. 8; Salsa Steel Christmas Band, First United Methodist Church Bell Choir, Rene's Marionettes, Harpist, Dec. 9; There will be other performances Dec. 15, 16, 22 & 23. Patriotic Photo Exhibit

Chula Vista Public Library is presenting 150 photographs from the "Flags Across San Diego County and the Nation" exhibit of over 600 American flags and patriotic images taken by San Diego County and nationwide residents. Begins Dec. 7 at 9 a.m. in honor of Pearl Harbor Day and continues through Dec. 14 at the Civic Center Branch Library, 365 F St.

 

Winterfest Activities

The tall ship "Californian" will be open for free public tours at Chula Vista Yacht Harbor from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 8. In addition, activities are slated from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the same day including a play area with 40 tons of snow. All other activities will be along the harbor with the tall ship tours at Marina Parkway Pier adjacent to the California Yacht Marina and Winterfest adjacent to Chula Vista Marina and RV Park. The event will feature food, crafts, live music, classic car show, children's entertainment and more. Entrance to the snow play area is free with a new unwrapped toy which will be donated to the South Bay Food & Toy Drive.

 

Holiday Pops

On Dec. 7-9, San Diego Symphony will perform three old fashioned Holiday Pops concerts featuring community performing arts groups such as Crusader Bells, San Diego Children's Chorale, Mariachi Champaña Nevín and the San Diego Master Chorale. Featuring favorites including Deck the Halls, Hanukkah Overture, the First Noel and many others. Classical repertoire will include Polanaise from Christmas Eve and Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah by Handel. The concerts conclude with guest artists and the San Diego Symphony leading audiences in the ever-popular carol sing-a-long. Concerts will be held at Copley Symphony Hall, 750 B Street, downtown. Arturo Sandoval

Twelve-time Grammy nominee Arturo Sandoval will electrify the Poway Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 8 PM. He and his band will perform a sensational blend of Latin jazz, classical, rock and Cuban music. He made news on October 12 when he performed the poignant "America the Beautiful" for President Bush at the White House. The HBO movie For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, which depicts his struggles as a musician in Cuba, won an Emmy Award in September. He has composed a film score, a ballet, and nine albums. He keeps very busy by serving a full professorship at Florida International University, where he maintains one of the most extensive programs in the industry. He gives master classes from high school level to professional. Oceanside Children's Holiday Parade

Main Street Oceanside is proud to present the 34th Oceanside Children's Parade on December 8th starting at 3 p.m. The parade will begin promptly at 3 p.m. and will run on Coast Highway from Wisconsin St. and end at the Oceanside Civic Center. Come see bands, floats, marchers and Santa Claus.

 

Christmas Concert

The combined San Diego Civic Chorale and Christ Church Unity Choir, accompanied by San Diego Symphony will present a concert celebrating the Christmas story in music and word. The performance will feature music from Handel's Messiah and Joseph M. Martin's "Journey of Promises." The concert will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 6:00 p.m. at Christ United Presbyterian Church, located at 3025 Fir at 30th St. in San Diego. The concert is free and open to the public.

 

"The Nutcracker"

The San Diego Civic Youth Ballet will perform "The Nutcracker." They will first perform at Balboa Park's 24th annual "Christmas on the Prado" Dec. 7 & 8 beginning at 6 PM. Full performances are Dec. 9, 15 & 16 at 2 PM and Dec. 14 & 15 at 7 PM. Tickets are $12 orchestra and $10 loge. All performances are at the Casa del Prado Theatre in Balboa Park. "La Pastorela de La Luz"

This Mexican-inspired Christmas musical is fresher and more relevant than ever. A traditional story of the shepherds' journey to Bethlehem to witness the first Christmas. Called to action by Archangels Michael and Gabriel, the shepherds face temptation and danger from evil Lucifer and his nasty minions. The bilingual script is primarily in English with more than a dozen beautiful Christmas carols sung in Spanish. "La Pastorela de La Luz" runs Dec. 7-12 at the Lyceum Space theatre in Horton Plaza. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and groups of 10 or more. For reservations call 544-1000.
