Carlsbad City Council Denies Affordable Housing for U.S. Marines, Mexican Americans and working Poor!

Mayor Bud Lewis along with Councilwoman Ann Kulchin, Julie Nygaard and Councilman Matt Hall voted to cut affordable housing by more than 50% from the City of Carlsbad General Plan! In the process, they will be reducing the stock of affordable housing available to those working families who earn $30,000 or less per year! Those that will be the most affected will be working class Americans, Mexican Americans, Asians, Filipinos, Blacks and all other minimum wage individuals who labor in the secondary labor market, hotels, restaurants, sales people, the agriculture sector, hospitals, schools, and low wage laborers, to name a few.

Unnoticed or ignored, by the unenlightened Mayor and City Council of Carlsbad, is the impact of eliminating over 3,000 affordable-level homes, apartments, or condos per year will have upon the low rank, underpaid, married enlisted Marines, who are stationed at Camp Pendelton. Being a Marine doesn’t guarantee that married enlisted men, with families, will be guaranteed on- base low rent housing. For those Marines, Carlsbad, which is located three miles from the base, is an attractive opportunity to find affordable housing for their families. Unable to get on base housing and being inadequately paid to afford the high cost of housing in the County of San Diego, they are limited to living in Oceanside or Carlsbad.

At a time when the President of the United States is sending off thousands of Marine Corp personnel to possibly invade Iraq and defend this country from terrorist attacks, it is unconscionable, that the City leadership, would send these Marines into a war while denying them the comfort of knowing their families are being cared for. Really is money that important? Does it really matter that the overpaid class of citizens that are living in large homes with swimming pools taking up all the land for moderate homes, are unhappy because of the traffic or their view of the ocean is obstructed? Perhaps the President of the United States should reinstate the draft so that all citizens, even the wealthy, have to sacrifice their sons and daughters to the defense of their country.

Flying the American flag is not enough. Carlsbad not only ignored its responsibility to all its residents but also forgot their duty to their country! Carlsbad has shamed the citizens of the County of San Diego.

(We wish to note that only one member of the city Council voted against this outrageous Proposal; Councilwoman Ramona Finnila!)
