Southwestern College Presents La Pastorela

Traditional Holiday Play to be Performed December 11-14

Chula Vista—The Southwestern College School of Arts and Communication and the College’s Education Center at San Ysidro are proud to present La Pastorela, based on a Spanish tradition and still being performed in many parts of México.

La Pastorela will be performed Thursday, December 11 through Sunday, December 14 at the San Ysidro Multicultural Complex, 4350 Otay Mesa Road in San Ysidro. The Dec. 11-13 performances will be at 7:00 p.m. with a Sunday, Dec. 14 matinee at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for general admission; $3 for students and children. Tickets can be purchased at Mayan Hall Box Office, MWF 2-4 p.m. and TTH 12-4 p.m., or by calling the SWC box office at (619) 482-6367.

“La Pastorela is a comedy full of fun, laughter, and songs,” said Sandra Cortez, director of the play and adjunct instructor at Southwestern College’s Theater Department. “This is the first time Southwestern College has performed La Pastorela in San Ysidro and we hope to make it an annual event.”

La Pastorela recounts the shepherds’ journey to Bethlehem to see the birth of Jesus. Along the way, however, they encounter Lucifer and his henchmen, who are determined to stop them from reaching their destination. It is thanks to the help of Michael the Archangel, and his sidekick Gabriel, that the shepherds are able to see the birth of Jesus.

La Pastorela, one of the masterpieces of the folk theater tradition, is being performed by students from Southwestern College’s main campus and the Education Center at San Ysidro. The play will be performed in English and the songs will be in Spanish.
