Logan and Sherman communities gather to address the issues affecting their communities

Who: Barrios Unidos Hoy Organizados (BUHO), a new grassroots organization born from the union of Developing Unity through Resident Organizing (DURO) and Grito de Justicia. These two organizations have collectively worked in the neighborhoods of Sherman and Logan Heights for six years. The goal of this organization is to build leaders that are committed to and engaged in making our communities affordable, vibrant, safe, and healthy.

What: 300 residents will gather at a community meeting to address the following issues: Affordable Housing for local residents, Preservation of Arts & Culture, the revival of the Sherman Heights Community Center, and Street Lighting and Maintenance. All nine City Council District 8 candidates have confirmed their attendance.

When: Saturday, August 27, 2005 from 1:00 to 3:00pm

Congresswoman Maxine Waters will speak on the Rush to War, the “Out of Iraq Caucus,” and the Revelations of  the Secret Downing St. Memo, Friday, August 26, 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. at the Union Hall of the Int’l Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers, 5150 Kearny Mesa Road, San Diego. Formerly known as, the San Diego County Council of Democratic Women. It was founded in 1955 by Verna King and other women activist who wanted to draw on the strength of women working in unison to get democrats elected in San Diego. These dedicated club members strove to educate women on party principles, walked neighborhood precincts held fundraisers and got Democrats elected to local, state and national offices. Also, the club had the first Democratic newsletter in San Diego County. Let the tradition carry on...Our club is the oldest chartered Democratic club in San Diego County. It’s time for women to present a spirit of unity! We must strive for women’s rights...and we can elect more women to public office by forming an alliance and acting as one strong voice.
