Ken Norton Escorts All Marine Boxing Team

Former Heavy Weight Champion of the World Ken Norton will be on hand to cheer on his former team, the United States All Marine Boxing Team as they compete against the Boxers For Christ National Team, August 26, 2000, 2:00 pm at Grace Church located at 3040 Fairmount Ave., in San Diego.

Norton will be lending his support to a competition that will literally help to fight the AIDS epidemic in the "Black Township" of Mbekweni near Cape Town South Africa.

The Boxers For Christ National Boxing Team will compete against the United States All Marine Boxing Team in an effort to raise funds to send the Boxers For Christ National Team to South Africa.

The Boxers For Christ National Team will compete twice while in South Africa. All proceeds from the second competition against the South African National Team will go toward the purchase of a Community Service Center that will include an: Orphanage, Computer Learning Center, Job Development Center, AIDS Prevention and Education Center and A Worship Center for the Born Again Church in Mbekweni.

Mbekweni is a "Black Township" outside of Cape Town South Africa. It is estimated by South African health officials that 45% of the young people between the ages of 10 to 24 years of age in Mbekweni are in the final stages of AIDS and will die within the next five years. The population of Mbekweni is over 80,000 people.

Robert Coons Executive Director of the United States Institute of Amateur Athletics

The USIAA boxing team.

(USIAA) and the National Director for the Boxers and Coaches for Christ National Association visited South Africa in May of 2000. "The level of human existences in the Black Townships of South Africa is beyond belief" states Coons. "There is so much to be done, the job appears to be overwhelming. However with just a little effort, miracle can happen in South Africa. It is estimated that between 10 to 25,000 spectators will come out to see the competition against the South African National Team and the Boxers For Christ National Team. All Proceeds from the second competition will go toward the purchase of the Community Service Center. It is possible that this one event will completely pay for the total cost of the Community Center".

"It is an honor to be involved in a project that has such a wide scope, stated Norton. I support the efforts of both the US. All Marine Team and Boxers For Christ National Team".

Norton started his boxing career as a member of the local Marine Boxing Team in San Diego. Norton went on to be a member of the All marine Team and later the Heavy Weight Champion of the World as he defeated Muhammad Ali here in San Diego.

"I sincerely hope that the San Diego community will come support this most worthwhile event. Each spectator and donor that comes to this event will not only see some of our nations top amateur prospects but will also help save the lives of countless individuals in South Africa. This gives a valuable perspective on how athletic competition can be used to be a beacon of hope for humanity" Norton concludes.
