Chicago, The Drop Dead Broadway Musical

CHICAGO has been embraced by the country and critics alike, receiving six Tony Awards, and a Grammy. This is the second National Tour of CHICAGO, starring Broadway actress Charlotte d'Ambroise, the multi-talented actress Khandi Alexander, and Broadway actor Brent Barrett.

CHICAGO will play at the Civic Theatre at 3rd and B from September 1-6. Tickets are now on sale at Concourse Box Office (202 C. St.) and at all Ticketmaster locations. Featuring music, book and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, and originally directed by Bob Fosse, CHICAGO is now directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Ann Reinking (Fosse's longtime muse) in the original choreographer's unique and sexy dance styles.

CHICAGO is based on the 1926 play of the same name written by Maurine Dallas Watkins. Watkins covered a real life trial of Belva Gaertner, a married cabaret singer accused of murdering her husband in Chicago. Shortly after this, Beulah Annan was convicted of killing her lover. Watkins covered both trials and endowed the residents of "Murderess Row" with celebrity status. Performance times are Tuesday - Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 and 6:00 p.m.

 

EastLake's Summer Sizzles with Free Community Concert Series

The Eastlake company is putting some pep into the dog days of summer by presenting the free "Summer Sounds 98" concert series. On Saturday, August 22, 1998, The Heroes will perform from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Favorites from the Beatles and Rolling Stones, plus contemporary classics, take center stage with this well known San Diego band.

On Saturday, September 12, 1998, the Fatburgers will be the featured band. Fresh off a whirlwind national tour, Fattburger is sure to delight music lovers of all ages with its incredibly smooth jazz. Bring out the blankets and the beach chairs - local school groups will have food for sale at the park

Jose Carreras—In Recital at the San Diego Civic Theater

IMG and Magicworks are pleased to announce that one of the three most acclaimed tenors in the world, Jose Carreras, will be performing at the San Diego Civic Theater on Saturday, November 14. Tickets go on sale Monday, August 24 at the Concourse box office and all Ticketmaster outlets or charge by phone at 570-1110.

In his first San Diego appearance since last years sell-out performance, Carreras will be singing at the Civic Theater giving the audience a rare glimpse of a superstar, up-close and personal. Carreras is regarded as one of the freatest boices in this era. His work, individually, and as one of the Three Tenors, has contributed to an enormous increase in the popularity of opera in the United States.

 

Pizza Hut "Jams" with Slam Dunk Basketball Clinic

Former NBA player and San Diego RLLW- Pizza Hut owner Jackie Robinson will put on the First Annual 1998 Pizza Hut Kids Basketball Jam @ Sea World San Diego (East parking lot at Sea World). Slated to take place on Saturday, August 29, 1998 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the event will feature 200 hundred pre-selected San Diego area boys and girls, ages 8-14.

Local media personalities and celebrities will tip-off the weekend's festivities with an exhilirating "3-on-3" Tournament on Friday, August 28, 1998 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. as they battle it out in court. Scheduled to appear are former NBA player Reggie Theus, ESPN's Chris Meyers, and Utah Jazz player Jeff Malone. For more information call 226-3617.

 

Cuban Rumba Dance Party

La Pena de Rumba is hosting a Cuban Rumba Dance Party, from 8 to 11 p.m. on Friday, August 28 at the Thomas Paine Coffee House (4247 Park Blvd., University Heights) An evening of entertainment celebrating Cuba's rich and vibrant culture with live performances of Rumba and Conga percussion, song and dance. Anyone is welcome to join in the festivities. The evening will also feature a demonstration of "Rueda de Casino" and the latest Cuban Salsa music for dancing. Admission is $6 students/ $8 general. "Old Masters" from the National Museum of Art of Romania to Open at the San Diego Museum of Art

Paintings of ingenious artistic styles and revered forms captured by Rembrandt, El Greco and others are displayed in Old Masters Brought to Light, August 29 - October 1 at the San Diego Museum of Art. Artists from Italy, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands are represented in 27 master painting from the National Museum of Art in Romania, and were selected bny guest Curator Dr. Diane De Grazia, chief curator of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The show is balanced by work that portrays the exquisite oil technique of Antonella da Messina, in his work Crucifixion, as well as the grotesque caricatures of Christ Carrying the Cross by the Master of the Augsburg Ecce Homo. Additionally, the exhibition concludes with Rembrandt, who is considered the ultimate religious painter of the Baroque era. His focus on the humanity of his subjects remained popular well after religious influence on European secular life had waned.

 

Outdoor Film Festival in Chula Vista

"Stand and Deliver," and "All Dogs go to Heaven," will be spotlighted at the free Cox Communications Film Festival presentations in Chula Vista. "Stand and Deliver," will be shown at Marina Park on August 28, and "All Dogs Go To Heavan" in Rohr Park on August 29. These Films are set to begin at 8 p.m., with pre-show activities set to begin at 6 p.m.

For these open-air, family oriented films, the audience sits on the grass in the parks in from of a large movie screen. Those attending are encouraged to bring low beach chairs or blankets for tseating and warm jackets or sweater. Plenty of free parking is available at each of the Chula Vista parks. All evenings begin with a cartoon.

Crossarts IV : "10 Point Must"

Sushi Performance & Visual Art and Lynx Performance are proud to present CrossArts IV, an exciting emotionally provocative, critically acclaimed, multi-arts collage. Entitled 10 Point Must, this world premiere will feature no less than 18 performers in the disciplines of progressive theater and dance, Capoiera marital art, live African/Afro Cuban/ Korean drumming, didgirido, and jazz music. Performances will be Thursday through Sunday, August 27-30 at 8 p.m. in the Reincarnation Project.

General Admission is $15/ students and seniors $12 and $10 for Sushi members.

Christian Community Theater

Christian Community Theater will present the musical Man of La Mancha at the Me. Helix Amphitheater Thursdays through Sundays from August 20 through September 5, with all shows beginning at 8 p.m. The most highly requested show from the past two years of audience voting, this will be CCT's first ever production of Man of La Mancha.

Featuring a cast of 24, the show is directed by Tom Schmidt, with with musical direction by Mary Campbell, and contains some of the most inspjiring music in theeater. The lead role of Don Quixote will be played by San Diego lawyer Bill Nolan, with Bryant Callihan as Sancho and Eleni Gianulis as Aldonza. Performance dates for Man of La Mancha are August 20, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 30, September 3, 4,and 5.
