SWC Mariachi Returns to Land of Mariachi

Mariachi Garibaldi to Perform at 12th Annual International Mariachi and Charrería Festival in Guadalajara, México

Chula Vista—For the third consecutive year, the Southwestern College (SWC) Mariachi Garibaldi will be performing at the world-renowned International Mariachi and Charrería Festival in Guadalajara, México. To help pay for their trip to Mexico, Mariachi Garibaldi will be giving a special presentation Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 4:00 p.m. in Mayan Hall Theatre*.

During this special performance, Mariachi students will delight the audience with traditional and modern Mexican songs. Tickets for this very special performance are $10 for general admission and can be purchased by calling the SWC box office at (619) 482-6367.

Proceeds from this concert will help finance the group’s trip to Mexico. About 20 SWC Mariachi students will perform at the 12th Annual International Mariachi and Charrería Festival, taking place September 1-11. The festival attracts nearly two million visitors each year. The event features Catholic masses accompanied by Mariachis in the Guadalajara Cathedral, a parade featuring mariachi groups and folk ballet artists, mariachi competitions, rodeos, Mexican art exhibitions and plenty of Mexican food.

“This is an excellent opportunity for our Mariachi students. They will be playing among some of the best mariachi groups from throughout Mexico and the world,” said Dr. Jeff Nevin, Mariachi Program Director at SWC’s School of Arts and Communication, who is on sabbatical but will accompany the students on the trip.
