Beyond Therapy

The Southwestern College Theatre faculty of the School of Arts and Communication present the summer performance, Beyond Therapy, August 8-11, 7:30 pm., at the Southwestern College Arena Road, Chula Vista.

This comedy brings together wacky therapists, really slow customer service and a letter to the editor as some of the zany obstacles Bruce and Prudence grip in the 1980s as they search for meaningful relationships. Latin Spice

A free concert featuring "San Diego's most romantic band," Mario Olivares & Latin Spice will be held on Saturday, August 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. in downtown Escondido. "Tri-cultural" duo Carlos Olmeda and Tóca Rivera will open the performance. The Escondido Arts Partnership is presenting the concert as part of the First Annual Summer Music Series, which also includes free concerts slated from August 12 and September 9. Each performance will be held on the green adjacent to Washington Mutual Bank at the corner of Grand Avenue and Center City Parkway in downtown Escondido. For more information, call (760) 480-4101.


The Wonders of Music

SummerFest 2000 brings the experience of classical music to children of all ages with fun, free Family Concerts. This year's one-hour Family Concerts (The First Annual Young Performer's Showcase and My, What Big Ears You Have!) will be on Saturday, August 12 and Saturday, August 19 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in Sherwood Auditorium at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, 700 Prospect Street, La Jolla. Concerts are free for anyone under 18. Adult tickets for the Family Concerts are only $15.00.


Comedy of Errors

North Coast Rep's Theatre for young audiences its fourth annual Shakespeare Summer productions with Comedy of Errors, opening August 12th.

The ultimate case of mistaken identity is the backdrop for this hilarious comedy. One of Shakespeare's earliest plays surrounding the events involving two sets of twins separated as infants during the proverbial shipwreck; only to find themselves many years later. The web of confusion spun is boisteriously entertaining as their misadventures set the whole town in chaos. Comedy of Errors will be performed August 12th, 13th, 19th & 20th at 11:00 a.m. Tickets for adults are $7.00, children $5.00. Huayucaltia Andean Jazz

Huayucaltia Andean new age jazz comes to Oceanside as one of four Oceanside Summer Sounds in the Park concerts August 13, from 5-7 p.m. at the N. River Road Community Center. For more than a decade, Huayucaltia has enlightened audiences in both North and South America with its unique sounds, a fusion of Andean, Afro-American, jazz, classical and rock influences. Community Actors will present a fantastic, highly entertaining, "Hypnosis Show" Sunday, August 13, 20, 27 & Sept. 3, 10, 17, at 7:00 p.m. at Community Actors Theatre located 2957 54th Street, San Diego. Donation is $10.00 per person. This Hypnotherapist is none other than Dr. Jim Soules, former Dean of Palomar College. He performs in schools, clubs, special events and also Hollywood. Different Kinds of Ferns

The San Diego Fern Society will hold its free annual judged plant show and sale on August 19 and 20, at the Recital Hall next to the Puppet Theater at the North end of Presidents Way in San Diego's Balboa Park. Saturday hours are 12:30 to 5:00 p.m. and for Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This year's show should be one of the nicest in the Society's history, with hundreds of different kinds of ferns on display. Many of these plants and others will be available in the sale area for those wishing to start or add to their collection of ferns.


"The King and I"

The classical musical production The King and I, will open August 18 under the starts at the Mt. Helix Amphitheater in La Mesa. This epoch-making musical relays the true story of an English governess who tutors the Siamese Crown Prince. Toe-tapping highlights include "Shall We Dance," "Hello, Young Lovers," "Getting to Know You," and "Whistle a Happy Tune." Performance dates are August 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26, 27, 31 and September 1 & 2 with all shows starting at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $11-$27 with children under 12 admitted for $10.00. Tiburón a la Vista

Este agosto, el Acuario Birch de la Scripps Institution of Oceanography en La Jolla, se unirá con el Discovery Channel, Daniels Cable Vision, y Time Warner Cable para presentar el séptimo anual espectáculo "Shark Discovery Days". La apertura de este evento se iniciará durante el fin de semana del 12 y 13 de agosto, y continuará hasta el lunes 4 de septiembre.

Habrá exposiciones especiales y varias actividades educativas que le permitirán al observador, descubrir la verdad sobre los tiburones. Se exhibirán una serie de interesantes artefactos tales como un espécimen preservado de tiburón, modelos de tiburón, mandíbulas y hasta huevos de tiburón. Además, habrá una simulación de una excavación de dientes fósiles de tiburones en la que pueden participar los niños. Las actividades y exposiciones de "Shark Discovery Days" quedan incluídas al precio de la entrada al acuario: $8.50 para adultos, $7.50 para los mayores de 60 años, $5.00 para niños y jóvenes de 3 a 17 años.
