Third Word “The Fusion of Music and Poetry” is sure to be the premiere hot bed of open mics, fostering a living organism of poetry and music while holding true to the series’ mission statement. Third Word is a socially conscious open mic promoting community empowerment through multicultural art forms. Welcome people of all cultures, class, sexual orientations, and alternative political viewpoints. Our mic is your mic.
At the Voz Alta Project, a Chicano/Latino based space created by and for the San Diego community, new frontiers are being explored. Never before has a venue in San Diego existed to embrace the fusion of music and poetry on one stage the way we do! Third Word, The Voz Alta Project’s bi-monthly open mic series hosted by the Brujas y Bellas writing circle and Los Able Minded Poets now extends its collaboration to include musicians that work with the Taco Shop Poets.
We are sealing the cracks that people have been falling in: bland open mics, and a lack of space that lends its mic and musicians to the community. At Third Word, people will have the option of vibing with the music on stage or doing poetry/spoken word on their own, and engage in dialogue with other poets and musicians.
The Voz Alta Project has hosted events in the past featuring noted artists such as Howard Zinn, Quincy Troupe, Quetzal, and most recently Nuyorican Poet Willie Perdomo. Third Word will also be hosting monthly features. It meets every other Monday at 8:00pm with the grand kick off May 3rd 2004 featuring poetry by the Brujas y Bellas and the Able Minded Poets.
The Musicians: Cameron Jasper (bass), Nick Carvajal (drums/guitar), Andrew Burton (drums) are musicians that fuse the rhythms of soul, jazz, salsa & blues, dropping smooth bass lines and urban grooves. They are experienced in working with poets, primarily with the Taco Shop Poets for the last two years, Pat Payne, Jah-Sun Olufemi and others.
Brujas y Bellas: Brujas y Bellas is a collective of women supporting one another in finding and refining their creative voice. B&B has released for the first time a bi-annual literary magazine The Pinche Chronicles, Remedios de Mujeres.
The Able Minded Poets: AMP is a four year old, six piece ensemble bringing a raw edge to poetic performance, combining hip-hop and smooth grooves with powerful verse and politically charged poetry.
