Hundreds Compete at Southwestern College’s Festival of Student Art Competition

Chula Vista — Hundreds of projects and student works are competing at Southwestern College’s (SWC) Fourth Annual Festival of Student Art (FOSA), sponsored by the College’s Associated Student Organization. However, only 13 will get to claim the top prize in as many categories and only one will win the coveted Best of Festival award.

“The response from students was overwhelming,” said Silvia Lugo, Performing Arts Coordinator for SWC’s School of Arts and Communication. “This annual art exhibit gives students the opportunity to show their artistic skills. However, we can only give out so many prizes,” added Lugo, thanking all those students who participated in the student art competition.

Students submitted more than 200 works to compete in the areas of sculpture, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, forensics, poetry, short story, screenwriting, drama, dance, music, and film.

Artists from the local community and other community colleges in the area will judge the works submitted and select the wining pieces and projects.

Winners in each of the 13 categories will receive a $200 scholarship. Judges will also select two honorable mentions for every category and the winners will each receive a $75 scholarship. However, only one work will receive the Best of Festival grand prize and its accompanying $400 scholarship.

The visual arts pieces will be exhibited at the SWC Art Gallery* April 27-May 12. The exhibition is free and open to the general public. The FOSA awards will be presented at a special ceremony, taking place May 18, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in the SWC Art Gallery Patio.

Gallery hours are 10-2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 1-4 p.m. Saturday.
