March 6, 2009
Lyric Opera San Diego’s Premiere Concert Series continues at the Birch North Park Theatre, with the Grammy Award-winning SPANISH HARLEM ORCHESTRA on Friday, March 13.
The evening promises to be one packed with hot Latin rhythms and lively salsa dancing. The Birch North Park Theatre welcomes salsa dancers by opening part of the stage for anyone who wants to dance, as well as encouraging dancing in the aisles and open area of the classic theatre.
Since its creation in 2000, Spanish Harlem Orchestra has established itself as a standard bearer of contemporary Latin music. Directed by world-renowned pianist, arranger, and producer Oscar Hernandez, the 13-member all-star ensemble has reintroduced the classic sounds of New York City Salsa to music lovers worldwide. “United We Swing,” SHO’s third album, is nominated for 2008 Grammy in the category of Best Tropical Album, a stunning follow-up to their 2004 Grammy award-winning album “Across 110th St.,” and their 2002 Grammy-nominated debut, “Un Gran Dia En El Barrio.”
On “United We Swing,” Spanish Harlem Orchestra continues in the same classic-meets-contemporary sound, but with refreshing originality. Nine of the songs are original compositions grounded in the unique identity the band has forged based on the musical legacy of El Barrio, a pulsating Eastside community in NYC located to the south of 125th St. that gave rise to Boogaloo, Latin Soul, and Salsa. The album’s finale features special guest Paul Simon with a reworking of his top ten hit “Late In The Evening/Tarde En La Noche.”
Details and Tickets: Doors open at 7pm and the concert begins at 7:30pm. All tickets: $40. Open seating, with dancing!
