The Southwestern Community College District Governing Board has named Michael Kerns its new Vice President for Human Resources and Dr. Angelica Suarez its new Vice President for Student Affairs. The appointments of the new vice presidents became effective following an extensive national search and selection process.
Dr. Suarez has more than 20 years of community college experience working in community college districts in Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Diego. Her administrative experiences include serving as Dean of the Higher Education Centers in San Ysidro and Otay Mesa for Southwestern College, as well as Dean with the City Colleges of Chicago. Dr. Suarez’s educational experience includes a doctorate from Loyola University Chicago in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and a Master’s Degree from Long Beach State University in Counseling & Student Development.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to work with an outstanding group of professionals as we continue to provide excellent services to our students and community,” said Dr. Suarez.
The Vice President for Student Affairs is responsible for providing administrative leadership for the total student services program of the College, supervises implementation of the College’s objectives and operational goals related to the student services program.
Kerns spent more than two decades at San Joaquin Delta College in a variety of increasingly responsible administrative positions. During his tenure, he gained experience in many aspects of community college administration, including Student Affairs and Business Services, in addition to working closely with the California Community College Chance-llor’s Office.
The Vice President for Human Resources is responsible for the administration of the College’s Human Resources Office, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) programs, policy and procedures, and serves as the District’s Chief Negotiator, working closely with the campus community.
