Hilltop High Wins San Diego County Academic Decathlon

Awards Ceremony Honors South County’s Dominance Against Reigning Southwest High School at 27th Annual Event

Tuesday night at the 27th annual Academic Decathlon Awards ceremony Hilltop High School was crowned San Diego Academic Decathlon Champions. Hilltop High beat out their record-breaking opponents, Southwest High, also of the Sweetwater Union High School District who in previous years dominated the Decathlon. The awards ceremony was held at the University of San Diego where all participating schools were honored.

More than 150 students from 17 local high schools took part in the February 7 competition, which was conducted at Sweetwater High School. Hilltop edged Academy of Our Lady of Peace for the winning title, with Southwest High finishing third. The entire top ten was made up of:

1. Hilltop High, Sweetwater Union High District
2. Academy of Our Lady of Peace, parochial
3. Southwest, Sweetwater Union High District
4. Scripps Ranch, San Diego Unified
5. Sweetwater, Sweetwater UHSD
6. Eastlake High, Sweetwater UHSD
7. Mar Vista, Sweetwater UHSD
8. St. Augustine, parochial
9. Fallbrook High, Fallbrook Union HSD
10. Bonita Vista High, Sweetwater UHSD

Both County Superintendent Dr. Randolph Ward and Jerry R. Rindone, County Board Member commended the students, teachers and parents, and said they looked forward to the day when students excelling in academic competitions were accorded the same recognition as athletes.

Hilltop will now represent San Diego County in the California Academic Decathlon Championship, to be held March 13-16 in Sacramento.
