Community Notes:

Councilmembers to Discuss Chula Vista Police Department Use of Force

Councilmembers Steve Castaneda and Rudy Ramirez will hold a Public Safety Subcommittee meeting on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 6PM at the Lauderbach Boys & Girls Club, 333 Oxford Street to discuss community concerns about an incident in which Chula Vista Police Department policies were questioned.

The agenda will include discussion of the department’s use of force during the 2006 arrest of Christian Morales in a trailer theft incident. Mr. Morales was not charged and the City of Chula Vista paid $400,000 to settle the lawsuit filed by Mr. Morales.

The incident has prompted numerous comments from the community regarding Police Department policies related to use of force and citizen complaints.

“Councilmember Ramirez and I strive to ensure open, transparent government in Chula Vista. When there are topics of concern to our community, we do everything possible to include public discussion,” stated Castaneda.

“Public Safety is my top priority while maintaining community confidence in our public safety personnel. This meeting will help to facilitate that goal,” Castaneda concluded.
