San Diego State Men’s Basketball Picked to Finish Third in MWC SDSU earns three first-place votes

The San Diego State men’s basketball team has been picked to finish in third place in the Mountain West Conference’s 2008-09 preseason media poll released Tuesday morning at the league’s annual media day. SDSU received a total of 170 points, including three first-place votes, and was the only school to have both men’s and women’s programs picked in the top three as the women were predicted to finish in second.

The Aztecs found themselves behind UNLV and Brigham Young in the poll. The Runnin’ Rebels garnered 206 points and 16 first-place votes, while the Cougars received 181 points and five first-place tallies. Behind San Diego State were Utah (148 points), New Mexico (132), Wyoming (75), Air Force (66), Colorado State (53) and TCU (49).

Senior forward Lorrenzo Wade was voted to the preseason all-conference team and was joined by BYU’s Lee Cummard, Wink Adams of UNLV, Luke Nevill (Utah) and Brandon Ewing (Wyoming). Wade enters his senior year as the Aztecs’ top returner in scoring and assists and is a two-time all-MWC pick.

This season San Diego State returns all five starters and its top eight scorers from a year ago, including all-conference performers Wade (first team), Ryan Amoroso (third team) and Billy White (third team and freshman of the year). Eight times Fisher has inherited a team that he coached the year before that returned at least four starters and all eight times the team has advanced to postseason play (seven NCAA Tournaments and one postseason NIT championship) and won at least 21 games.

SDSU will make its first appearance of the season in an exhibition game against Point Loma Nazarene on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. PT and will get its regular season underway on Saturday, Nov. 15, vs. UC San Diego at 1 p.m. PT. Both games will be held at Cox Arena.
