Applications for Home Repairs Now Being Accepted For Our 2009 Home Renovation Program

Deadline extended to December 10, 2008

WHO: Applications are now being accepted from low-income families, who own their own home and need assistance with home repairs.

  WHAT: Rebuilding Together San Diego, is a non-profit and affiliate of the largest national volunteer home rehabilitation and affordable housing preservationist organization in America. This grassroots non-profit aids the elderly, disabled and low-income families throughout San Diego who own and live in their own home, but because of age, physical limitation and low and/or fixed incomes, are not able to address their housing repairs themselves.

• All work is performed at no cost to the recipients accepted into our program.

• Community non-profit facilities struggling between program costs and deferred maintenance are also welcome to apply.

• Now in our 14th year we have completed over 350 projects vesting more than $8 million dollars in market value into the San Diego community.

  HOW: Volunteers team together with sponsors, who join forces to renovate homes in communities in and around San Diego, performs such tasks as interior and exterior painting, general cleanup, landscaping, plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs that benefit qualified recipients.

WHEN: The deadline to apply is:  December 10, 2008.

Community Relations Specialist Josie Calderon Joins Community HousingWorks Board

Community Relations Specialist Josephine Calderon, President and Owner of JLC Consultant Services, has joined the board of directors of San Diego-based Community HousingWorks.

A community relations public servant working to improve the quality of life in communities historically underrepresented, Ms. Calderon joined the Board hoping to share her special talent for bringing together community stakeholders to develop successful civic outcomes through creativity, collaboration and mutual trust in South Bay.

“Community HousingWorks is probably the finest local non-profit developer of affordable housing to be found in southern California!” says Ms. Calderon. She observes her deep ties to the non-profit world should probably bring big dividends to Community HousingWorks and the affordable housing community at large.

Share the Warmth - Blanket Drive

Pack and Bianes Vision Care is holding the “Share the Warmth” blanket drive benefiting South Bay Community Services (SBCS), a South Bay area non-profit agency working to help children, youth and families in need.

The three-week campaign hopes to collect new or gently-used blankets for use in SBCS’ emergency shelters and transitional housing programs.

Donations can be made at either of the South County Pack and Bianes locations:

- Pack and Bianes Vision Care: Eastlake Village Walk Medical Center, 890 Eastlake Parkway Suite 102, Chula Vista, CA 91914

Each year, South Bay Community Services responds to over 1,400 calls for service for victims of domestic violence and their children. The Casas Seguras shelters are always at capacity. South Bay Community Services is a non-profit organization providing services, support and opportunities for over 50,000 individuals and families annually in the South San Diego County.

San Diego Model Railroad Museum Joins Toys for Tots to Help the Men and Women Serving Our Country

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is making a wish possible this holiday season by helping our men and women serving this country. Donate a new unwrapped toy now through December 14, 2008 to benefit disadvantaged children and visit the Model Railroad Museum for only $3.00

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is open Tuesday-Friday 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM and 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Children 15 years old and under are free, adult admission is $6. without an unwrapped toy.

Grand Jury Applicants Needed From All Areas of San Diego County

Dedicated individuals with sound judgment are needed from all areas of the county to serve on the 2009/2010 San Diego County Grand Jury. The Grand Jury investigates citizen complaints and performs its traditional function as a watchdog over government agencies. The Grand Jury does not conduct criminal investigations.

Applications are now available by telephone at 619-450-7272 or in person at the San Diego Superior Court civil business offices Downtown and in the North, South and East branches of the court. You may also download an application from the San Diego Superior Court’s website at www.sdcourts.ca.gov or the Grand Jury’s website at www.sdcounty.ca.gov/grandjury.
