Community Notes:

Gang Awareness Prevention Program

Please come and participate in this free educational program, “Gangs: A problem in our communities”, that will provide you with very important information about how to prevent and understand the gang problem in your community.

There will be two speakers: Dr. Beatriz Villarreal and Hector Meza. Dr. Villarreal will conduct the program in Spanish and Mr. Meza will present the same information in English.

The topics are:

· What is a gang and how they are established in our communities

· What are some of the characteristics of a gang member and how we can prevent our kids from glamorizing and participating in gang behavior

· What can parents and family members do to prevent our youth getting into gangs

· What does the law say about graffiti and gang related crimes

· Why our youth glamorize gang behaviors and what are the reasons they want to be part of a gang

· How can we know if our kids are participating in gang related behaviors and where can we ask for help?

This program is presented by the Oceanside Community Safety Partnership. It will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2008, at 5:45 - 7:45 pm at the Joe Balderrama Recreation Center, located at 709 San Diego Street. 2008 MLK Scholarship Awards

Fifteen students from six different high schools will share $50,000 in scholarship awards as recipients of the 2008 City of Oceanside – Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Awards. The students will be introduced at the annual garden reception, which will be held on Friday, June 6, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the home of Stephen and Janet Lacy. The garden reception is the sole fundraising event for the scholarship program; tickets for the evening at $35 per person are available at the door or by calling (760) 722-1234. All funds raised at the garden reception go to the scholarship program; the City of Oceanside sponsors the program but no public funds are used in the program. This is the seventeenth year for the program with over $350,000 distributed to 160 students since inception. The scholarship program is open to all high school seniors who live in the City of Oceanside; for more information on the program and when applications will be available for the 2009 awards, call (760) 435-3393.
