Local Students Awarded Top Honors

Local Southwestern College student, Adrian Del Rio earned Certified Student Leader credentials during the recent National Conference on Student Leadership in Atlanta. Del Rio was one of 96 students attending the conference to earn this award by scoring high on an examination of leadership skills. The exam tests candidates on the skills necessary for the effective leadership of student organizations including running effective meetings, resolving conflicts, creating and inclusive and diverse environment, and launching successful publicity and promotional campaigns. Del Rio is currently serving Southwestern Community College District as a Student Trustee.

In addition, the SWC Athletic Department is proud to announce Viridiana Martino as the women’s 2007 COA/CCCAA Pepsi Scholar Athlete. Martino was awarded for excelling academically, athletically, and in citizenship and represents the positive outcomes of dedication, hard-work and service.

Martino was recently honored at the 2008 COA/CCCAA Celebration of Student Athlete’s Luncheon in conjunction with the California Community College Commission on Athletics (COA) and California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) annual convention in Ontario, California. The Pepsi Scholar Athlete Award is the highest student achievement honor awarded annually by the COA/CCCAA.

Martino has been accepted to University of Southern California where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree. In addition, Martino received numerous scholarships while a student at SWC, including an ASO Athlete Scholarship, a Chicano Latino Coalition Scholarship, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Scholarship.
