Holiday Calendar of Events:

Family Holiday Concert at the Escondido Public Library

Escondido Public Library Children’s Services presents a free Family Holiday Concert featuring the Sapphire String Quartet on Tuesday, December 16 at 6:30 p.m. The concert will be held at the Main Library in the Turrentine Room. Families, and children of all ages, are invited to this interactive concert, which will include a family sing-a-long, selections from the Nutcracker Suite, Christmas classics by Bach and Vivaldi, and favorite winter pop songs. Don’t miss this entertaining family evening full of holiday cheer.

The Sapphire String Quartet is a youth quartet and has played chamber music for the last 7 years as a group. The quartet features Patti Diaz and Elena Segarra on violin and Morgan Mastrovich on viola and Jillian Broeckel on cello. Escondido Public Library is pleased to welcome this youth quartet to perform a holiday concert for the third year.

This free event is open to the public, and generously sponsored by the Friends of the Escondido Public Library. The Escondido Public Library is located downtown at 239 S. Kalmia Street.

Chula Vista Rec Centers Host Holiday Events

Recreation centers across the city are gearing up for the holidays with special activities and events.

Check out one of the fun activities near you:

Veterans Recreation Center Kid’s Night Out, for ages 5-12, is an opportunity for parents to finish up their holiday shopping while their kids have an evening of fun, including holiday crafts, activities, and treats. It is scheduled for Friday, December 19 from 6-10 p.m. and the fee is $10 for residents and $13 for non-residents. Winter Camp, for ages 6-12, will be held Monday through Friday, January 5-9, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and will include a fieldtrip to the El Cajon Boardwalk, arts and crafts, games, and special events. The fee is $130 for residents and $163 for non-residents; morning and afternoon extended care is available for an additional fee. Call (619) 691-5260 to register.

Heritage Recreation Center will host a Gingerbread House Workshop on Saturday, December 13, from 1-3 p.m. In addition, a Flashlight Candy Cane Hunt, in which participants ages 2-6 will make arts and crafts, play games, learn the secret of the candy cane and search the park for candy canes, will be held on Friday, December 12 from 5-6:30 p.m. Remember to bring a flashlight, and a bag to put your sweet treats in. The registration fee is $10 for residents and $13 for non-residents and advanced registration is required. Call (619) 421-7032 for more information.

Loma Verde Center will host Santa is Coming to Loma Verde Center on Friday, December 12, from 3-4 p.m. Candy canes will be free for everyone and parents, don’t forget your cameras! For more details, call (619) 691-5082. Once again, Loma Verde Center will be distributing toys for the Toys for Tots program on Dec. 12 from 5-7 p.m. Every year the center takes applications in October through the first week of November from local families and local Family Resource Centers. This year there are 231 local children registered to receive toys.

Otay Recreation Center will again be hosting its annual Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 13, from 9-10:30 a.m. Come enjoy a warm breakfast of pancakes and sausages with the entire family as well as make holiday crafts together. A special appearance will be made by Santa himself, so don’t forget to bring your camera! Space is limited and registration is required, $4 for adults $2 for children. Call (619) 476-5325.

Oceanside Senior Holiday Ball is Coming!

The Oceanside Senior Center will host the annual Senior Ball, a winter-themed dance for everyone ages 55 and better on Sunday, December 14, 2008, from 7:00-10:00 p.m. at the Oceanside Beach Recreation Center, located at 300 North The Strand. Tickets $15.00 each. Tickets may be purchased at the Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Come dressed in your holiday best and plan to dance the night away to the music of the South Coast Swing Band. Although light refreshments will be served, please dine prior to attending as dinner will not be served.

The parking fee is waived at Pay Lot 30 located at Seagaze and North The Strand and at Pay Lot 24 located at Myers Street and Pier View Way. Parking is also available at the transit Center parking lot at Cleveland and Seagaze. Free shuttle service will be provided by from each of the parking areas to the front door of the center.

SWC Celebrates Holidays with Musical Festivities

A Festive Music Week

WHAT: The Music Faculty of the School of Arts and Communication at Southwestern College (SWC) presents a week-long musical extravaganza. The performances will vary from classic Mexican folklore to tribal beats from Africa, to Jazz and ending the week with a traditional holiday celebration. The program will showcase a number of talented student ensembles.

The SWC Mariachi Garibaldi, directed by Dr. Jeff Nevin, added an additional performance to accommodate its growing audience, includes more than 30 students. The Sounds of Africa brings the sights and sounds of West Africa to the Mayan Hall stage, highlighting both the SWC African Drumming Ensemble and the SWC African Dancing Ensemble. The week-long musical performances will end the annual Holiday Choral Concert, featuring the SWC Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Additionally, a special guest performance by the Peninsula Singers will appear at the Holiday Choral Concert.

Musical Navideño con La Sinfónica Juvenil de Tijuana

Tijuana, B.C. — Luego de ser parte fundamental en el espectáculo infantil Pedro y el Lobo el pasado 30 de noviembre, la Sinfónica Juvenil de Tijuana nuevamente se presentará en el CECUT, en esta ocasión para presentar el tradicional Musical Navideño, bajo la dirección del Mtro. Pavlo Getman, este domingo 14 de diciembre a las 6:00 p.m.

El programa de este concierto inicia con “Farandole” de G.Bizet, posteriormente Coral y Fuga: “All Glory be to God on High” de J.S.BACH, “La Sinfonía de Juguetes” de Leopoldo Mozart, “Intermezzo sinfónico” de P. Mascagni y por último “Pedro y el Lobo” de S.Prokofiev (un cuento musical para niños).

El Coro de la Sinfónica Juvenil de Tijuana, bajo la dirección del Mtro. Luis Alonso Valenzuela Ciapara, interpretará el siguiente programa: Posada Mexicana (Tradicional), Navidad Provenzal/Venid Pastorcillos (Tradicional Francesa), La Santa Noche (Adolphe Adam), El niño del tambor (Katherine K. Davis M. Clavero), Canción de las campanas (M. D. Leontovich) y Adeste Fideles (M. A. Da Fonseca-Portagal).

National City Chamber of Commerce Presents El Toyon Elementary School Choir at Morgan Square

The National City Chamber of Commerce is hosting the El Toyon Elementary School Choir at Morgan Square in National City on Friday, December 12, 2008 at 11am.

Brian Clapper, President of the National City Lion’s Club, led the effort and approached the Chamber to coordinate a small but meaningful Holiday event. Over 60 El Toyon students will perform a mix of Spanish and English Holiday songs to deliver a heartfelt performance to the National City community. “The students are so excited to perform before a public audience,” shares Brian Clapper.

This event will also honor El Toyon students that have achieved perfect attendance during the school year. El Toyon Elementary School is fundraising $500 to provide a small gift to each honored student.
