Bush Declares San Diego A Federal Disaster Area - Money Available to San Diego County Residents for Recovery

By E.A. Barrera

President George W. Bush has declared San Diego County a federal disaster area, making residents of all areas hit by the 2007 firestorm eligible for federal aid to assist in the recovery process. That assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

“This is the news we have been waiting for an it will really accelerate the rebuilding effort. It is really good news,” said San Diego Board of Supervisor’s chairman Ron Roberts.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a statement saying those who sustained losses could begin applying for assistance as early as October 25. People seeking information can register online at http://www.fema.gov or by calling either 800-621-FEMA (3362) or 800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

Safe Cleanup of Fire Ash
Provided by Paradise Valley Hospital
The recent fires have deposited large amounts of ash on indoor and outdoor surfaces in areas near the fire. Questions have been raised about possible dangers from contact with the ash and safe disposal procedures. The ash deposited by forest fires is relatively nontoxic and similar to ash that might be found in your fireplace. However, any ash will contain small amounts of cancer-causing chemicals. In addition, fire ash may be irritating to the skin, especially to those with sensitive skin. If the ash is breathed, it can be irritating to the nose and throat and may cause coughing. Exposure to ash in air might trigger asthmatic attacks in people who already have asthma. Therefore, in order to avoid possible health problems the following is recommended.

Doctor’s Corner
By Dr. Eduardo Grunvald, M.D.
Ovarian Cancer, One of Those Silent Killers
Ovarian cancer is one of those “silent killer” diseases because it can grow and spread without any symptoms until it is too late. Even when symptoms appear, they can be so common and non-specific that doctors and patients alike can ignore them or forego appropriate investigation. While maintaining an often-difficult balance of informed alertness and undue alarm, women should be aware of the warning signs and stay in tune with their bodies.

Communities Come Together In Time of Need
Spanish only residents still left out of the information loop
During the 2003 Cedar fire there was a sense of panic and chaos. This week with the Witch Creek and Harris fires there was quick and controlled response to the fires. Homeowners were notified. Evacuations were timely and orderly. Emergency shelters were established and all the communities throughout San Diego jumped in together to volunteer, donate, and offer support in any way possible. The sense of panic we felt in ’03 was not visible and was supplanted by a community coming together. All San Diegans should feel proud for the way they have responded to this emergency.

NC Mayor Ron Morrison, One Year Later!
Political Reality, or Political Illusion?
Hands down and without a doubt; the worst political administration in National City’s (NC) history over the last 40 years, was ex-Mayor Nick Inzunza’s administration. Politically, Inzunza’s record will be soon be surpassed by recently elect Mayor Ron Morrison after serving one year in office. Mayor Morrison was elected on 2006 with a 12% political mandate out of 15,901 registered voters.
