Saturday, March 31, 2007, Project New Village will host its seventh annual community tribute to Cesar E. Chavez. Called “one of the most heroic figures of our time”, by the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Chavez’s four decades of work led to significant political and social justice achievements. He believed in and practiced non-violence in the face of racial and social injustice. Additionally, Chavez was a staunch health advocate.
In keeping with Chavez’s legacy, activities planned for the Project New Village Community Tribute in southeastern San Diego include a VIP reception at the Tubman-Chavez Center at 10:00am; a Unity Walk from the Center to Market Creek Plaza at 11:00am; a Wellness Resource fair and Multicultural Talent Showcase at Market Creek Plaza from 12 noon to 5pm.
The San Diego Black Nurses Association will provide screening for blood pressure and diabetes. Other confirmed community resources participating in the Wellness Resource Fair include the American Cancer Society, County Health and Human Services Agency, La Muestra Family Clinic, Family Health Centers of San Diego, Planned Parenthood, Lord’s Fitness Community Development Center, Flow Yoga, and the African American 5 a Day Campaign.
The annual Community Tribute to Cesar E. Chavez is a part of the Project New Village Community Wellness Campaign. This event is supported by the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation; Market Creek Plaza; the office of Councilman Tony Young, Coalition of Neighborhood Councils, the Latina y Latino Unity Coalition and the Armed Services YMCA.
We encourage families and neighbors to come out and honor the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez. For more information call 619 262-2022 or visit projectnewvillage.org.
