The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), San Diego Council #2842 have for the past 21 years presented students with recognition and inspiration awards. This year, the 22nd awards presentation, was perhaps the best program of them all.
This year Bea Estrada, president of LULAC, not only wanted to recognize 48 outstanding students but also wanted to recognize our military community with this year’s guest speaker, Brigadier General Angela Salinas, Commanding General of MCRD.
General Salinas gave an inspiring and entertaining presentation that related with the young students in the audience, with her coming from a low income family eating beans and tortillas, being the first in her family to graduate from college, and at the same time serving as a role model of success as she became the first Hispanic Latina to achieve the rank of General.
Also included in the audience and as presenters were Brigadier General James Combs, Command Sgt. Major George Peña, Lance Corporal Anthony Lebron, Capt. Samuel Rosales, Corporal Sobeil Escobedo, and Sgt. Augustine Tapia.
As has become tradition, Vic Salazar, television news anchor was once again his sterling self, directing a fun, smooth flowing, day of recognition.
But the hallmark of the afternoon was the recognition and inspiration of the 48 students who were honored for their hard work throughout the school year which was reflected in their success as they all aspired to continue down the road of success to bigger and better things for themselves and their families.
This was also a time to recognize all the contributions and work put in by the LULAC counsel and their contributors. If it wasn’t for support of such corporations as Anheuser-Busch Sales of San Diego, Macy’s, the San Diego Padres Baseball Club, Nordstroms, Black Angus, Smart & Final, and National City to name a few, plus all the individual contributions and support, the day would not have been possible.
Now work is underway for LULAC’s annual Thanksgiving Food Program and Christmas Basket Program. The work never stops for the local LULAC members. LULAC is consistently working to make life a little better for those within their community!
