The Kids Cooking Contest is designed as a Nutrition Education program to create an opportunity for students to learn about healthy foods and simple ways to prepare healthy snacks and meals. The contest cook-off was held Thursday, June 7, 2007 at the Chula Vista Elementary School District offices.
Starting in December and ending in February, students at 43 school sites were invited to submit recipes to the school cafeteria to be judged on:
· Kid Friendly Preparation
· Fun Kid Food
Out of over 2,000 submissions, seven recipes were selected as finalists based on the above criteria. At the final cooking competition, an adult assisted the student chefs. Cooking stations were set up with all needed items to prepare the dishes and, in some cases, recipes requiring lengthy preparation were pre-made. Student chefs showed judges and spectators how to prepare the dishes and judging was completed that evening.
