Get Your Team Together for ACS Relay for Life in National City 24-Hour Campout Raises Funds for Cancer Research, Education and Programs

Representatives from businesses, schools, churches and service organizations are invited to be on the planning committee for the upcoming Relay For Life event in National City, Aug. 11-12, Kimball Park. Committee members, team captains, sponsors and volunteers are also being recruited for the event. Relays are the American Cancer Society’s 24-hour campouts and walka-thons to increase awareness of the incidence of cancer and how to prevent its occurrence.

Upcoming National City committee meetings are at 6 p.m., every Monday from July 9 to the event date, at City Hall, Second Floor Conference Room, 1243 National City Blvd.

The basic idea behind Relay is to keep at least one team member moving on the track during the entire 24-hour period. The event has the ambiance of a youth group campout, with teams competing to decorate their campsites. Entertainment and activities for all ages are scheduled throughout the day and night. One of the highlights of Relay is the evening luminaria ceremony in which candle-lit luminarias — decorated with the names of cancer survivors and those lost to cancer — are placed around the track to light the way for walkers and runners.

The National City Relay is one of several Society Relays held in San Diego County in summer and fall. For more in formation on how you can join the fight against cancer, please call Elena Miller, (619) 994-9705 or e-mail millerem04@cox.net.
