Students at KIPP Adelante Prep Academy Demonstrate Philanthropy Can Cross Generations and Borders

Members of the Beta Club at KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy (KIPP Adelante) have embarked on their second international fundraiser during the 2006-07 academic school year. For several weeks, Beta Club members have been selling chocolate roses that were delivered on Valentine’s Day. Proceeds from the chocolate sale, will support the services offered at a Nursing home in Mexico, Casa Para Pobres Desamparados, A.C” in Tecate, Mexicali.

“It was a great feeling working with all the other students in preparing over 600 chocolate roses. I am so glad that we are able to assist our family and friends across the border, and it’s just great knowing we are helping others,” said Rebecca Mercado, an 8th grader and the Chocolate Rose Organizer.

Sual Solis, a 7TH grader and prominent Beta Club member will personally deliver the donation and tour the facility on Wednesday, February 21, 2007.

The school climate at KIPP Adelante promotes active participation in school life and the wider community. The Beta Club serves as a vehicle for students to become involved with community service activities. This past holiday season, Beta Club members raised $1600 to purchase school supplies for students at Machiu Primary School, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Students held a penny drive, sold passes to a school-wide jeans day, cookie-sale and also generously gave up of their allowance money. “

The Beta Club was founded at KIPP Adelante in 2004. Since then, members have raised over $6000 dollars to support of a variety of community organizations including Mama’s Kitchen, victims of Hurricane Katrina, and the U.S. Military troops overseas. The club began with 13 members and has grown to include 54 dedicated members. Students with a 90% average on their first semester report cards are eligible for Beta Club membership. A selection committee comprised of teachers from various grade levels evaluates candidates on the basis of academics and sound character.

“It has been great watching theses students mature over the past two years into civic responsible youth, ready to serve and give up so much of them in order to help others. This is what humanity is about – helping others,” said Beta Club advisor and Founder St. Claire Adriaan.

KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy is a college-preparatory charter school serving 330 students in grades five through eight.
