Civil Rights Legend Dolores Huerta Presents Fiesta Del Sol 2007 Scholarships

Civil rights legend Dolores Huerta will attend San Diego’s second annual Fiesta Del Sol next weekend to help award scholarships to 20 high school and college students.

During the first annual Fiesta Del Sol-San Diego, the event gained recognition as a family-friendly street fair with a Latin flair and a mission to empower the community to make social change. Continuing that mission, Huerta’s presence will highlight the 20 recipients of $1,000 Fiesta Del Sol Scholarships to offset the cost of college textbooks for the 2007 school year.

Water Conservation: We are in a Stage 1 Drought! Dennis Cushman of the San Diego County Water Authority will speak about conservation measures to help prevent mandatory rationing and receive tips from Chula Vista Garden Club members about water-wise gardening methods.

Mobile Home Park Closure Ordinance: Find out about the City’s proposals for compensation to residents facing mobile home park closures and hear the counter proposals from park residents.

Status Reports: We will receive brief status reports on the Parking Study for the urban core; the Bayfront Master Plan and ongoing negotiations; recent restructuring of Chula Vista ’s Redevelopment Corporation; new business openings and future projects planned in the Third Avenue Village ; and the long awaited survey of Historic Sites.

Southwestern College Sponsors “SWC Fall Festival”

SWC to Offer Fun, Food, and Entertainment on August 18 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

WHAT: Southwestern College (SWC) will be celebrating its Fall Festival with Chalk Art, a City Car Club Car Show, kid zone, and live music. Fall Festival participants will have the opportunity to learn about the many programs available at SWC by familiarizing themselves with the college campus and services provided.

At the SWC Fall Festival participants are encouraged to apply and register on-site, purchase text books, obtain their college photo ID, and tour the college and its newest facilities. Additionally, information about college services such as counseling services and financial aid will be available.

The 5th Annual X-Man’s Cruise for the Cause

MAGIC 92.5 Afternoon Host Xavier the X-Man, Otay Ranch Town Center and The American Red Cross come together for “The 5th Annual Xavier The X-Man’s Cruise for the Cause Blood and Marrow Drive.”

This annual event features a free car show and showcases over 100 of the hottest Lowriders, Hot Rods, Trucks, Motorcycles in San Diego. This year’s event proceeds will benefit the “Friends of Scott Foundation - Friends to Children with Cancer” a local organization that provides support and advocacy to children and families.

“It’s all about saving child-ren’s lives, bringing awareness to the national bone marrow registry, and having the community come together to make a difference.” The X-Man says, “It doesn’t cost a dime to get on the registry or to donate blood. Together we can save lives!”

The “5th Annual Xavier The X-Man’s Cruise for the Cause Blood & Marrow Drive” is Saturday, August 11th at Otay Ranch Town Center from 10a to 3p. In addition to the free car show, there will be entertainment and activities for the entire family, including scheduled appearances from Legendary R & B artist “Brenton Wood” and Local Hip Hop artist “Lil’ Rob”, scheduled performances by Agua Dulce and Rising Star Band, face painting by Twinkles the Clown, so much more.

14th Annual Encanto Street Fair featuring the Multi-Platinum group, WAR Saturday, August 18, 2007

The 14th Annual Encanto Street Fair and Cultural Arts Festival—one of San Diego’s favorite family-friendly Street Festivals returns after a one year hiatus to its regular spot — three city blocks on Imperial Avenue between 65th and 68th streets in Southeastern San Diego.

The event is all day, beginning at 10.00am and ending at 8.00pm.

This year’s featured act is one of entertainments’ most enduring groups WAR, with classic hits like “Slippin’ into Darkness”, “Why Can’t We Be Friends” and “Lowrider”. WAR will be playing the main stage, one of three stages featured for this years edition of the Encanto Street Fair and Cultural Arts Festival, with over thirty performing acts.

National City Library Kicks Off “Sunday Family Movies”

The National City Public Library will hold a special Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and celebration on Sunday, August 12th, 2007 at 1:00 pm (1401 National City Blvd. National City, CA 91950) to kick off their new expanded hours on Sundays from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Other upcoming events include Sunday Family Movies at 2:00 pm every Sunday starting August 19th and, in the fall, Science Lab, fun experiments exploring the world of natural science for 3rd through 6th graders on Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm. “The National City Library has always supported the strengthening of family bonds. That is why we are so excited to be now open on Sundays. This gives us the unique opportunity to provide fun, wholesome entertainment on a day which is already traditionally used to bond with one’s family” says Acting City Librarian, Minh Duong.

A Poker Tournament Fundraiser

The groom of Lava Man, a legend race horse, was seriously injured in an automobile collision July 23 near the Del Mar Racetrack.  Noe Garcia lost his left arm in the accident.  A poker tournament will be held August 16 to benefit Garcia’s recovery and rehabilitation, including training in use of a prosthetic arm.
