Mercado del Barrio Project Meeting, Thursday (jueves), September 21 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church (719 Cesar Chavez Pkwy). The three final redevelopment firms will present the results of the previous community meeting and invite further public input. This development project, adjacent to Chicano Park, could heavily weigh the future of this historic barrio, make sure you the gente del barrio have a say in what’s created.

The two Chicano poets who bounce their poetics on both sides of the border, Francisco Bustos and Michael “Cheno” Wickert (Aqui Estamos …Ya Nos Vamos) will be blessing the microphone in Tijuana TONIGHT, Sept 15 at 7 p.m. at the bar, “Dandy del Sur,” located between Avenida Revolucion and Sixth Street. The University Heights Art Association invites you into the studios of 22 artists this weekend, Sept. 16 and 17, at the University Heights Art Open. It’s a walk through the neighborhood, visiting studios of artists like Mario Torero, showcasing pieces by the late Guillermo Acevedo. 16th San Diego Annual Music Awards 2006 is back, Mon., September 18th at 7:30 pm at Viejas Concerts in the Park (5000 Willows Road, Alpine, CA 91901). $50 reserved table seating; $30 general admission seating. The Media Arts Center San Diego’s Teen Producers Project will be screening their most recent film, Barrio Logan: Youth Voices on Wednesday, Sept 20 at the El Cajon Library (201 E. The Return of the Lingo remembers Voz Alta’s original open mic poetry series, co-hosted by poet, writer, educator and veteran of the influential Chicano spoken-word collective The Taco Shop Poets, Tomás Riley (Mahcic) a.k.a. YO FOOLIO and fellow spoken word artist Bennie Herron (Churches and Liquor Stores). Riley was instrumental in the creation of TSP and co-founded the Voz Alta Project. This 36 year-old committee is a grassroots organization comprised of volunteers who work to ensure that the original stated goals of the development and expansion of Chicano Park “all the way to the bay” are never abandoned, and they organize the Annual Chicano Park Day Celebration throughout the year. Guzmán López is a poet and journalist who grew up crossing and re-crossing the San Diego-Tijuana border.
