Chachalacato “Peje”

Tri-City Medical Center and Immigration are two seperate issues

As a nurse at Tri-City Medical Center for the last 10 years, it’s frustrating to hear that some people in our community are not willing to support Prop F until we fix the immigration problem. I believe this is short-sighted and dangerous to the citizens of our community. First, the national healthcare crisis is a product of Federal and State laws. It’s the doctors, nurses and patients that are stuck in the middle. Tri-City Medical Center has no authority over immigration reform.

Though I welcome any constructive changes to better manage immigration, our healthcare can’t wait for politicians to finally agree on a solution!

Let’s get back to what Prop F is all about. Prop F is a solution to a local problem, a solution that will improve our hospital, our healthcare and our safety for generations to come. This is important! There is no debate about it!

Tri-City Medical Center, like hospitals throughout the state, is being mandated by the state to withstand a 7.0 earthquake. Currently 70% of the medical center’s buildings cannot stand up to this. The neo-natal intensive care unit, the adult critical care unit, the telemetry unit and many essential services in these buildings!

If Tri-City Medical Center does not meet this mandate and does not have the funds to reconstruct the buildings, it will have to close. It’s that simple. If you or a love one is injured and you call 911, wouldn’t you want to be taken to the closest hospital for emergency care? If Prop F doesn’t pass, there is a good chance your community hospital will no longer be there! Are you willing to take that gamble?

If you are like me, you care about protecting local health services. If you are like me, you will do what it takes to protect our community and if you are like me, you won’t let other national issues distract you from something so important.

Our healthcare isn’t a debate!

Please help me fix our hospital. Vote YES on F June 6th.

Filner-Vargas debate draws comparisons

I attended the debate between Bob Filner and Juan Vargas at Southwestern College on May 13th. A young man who identified himself as a Latino asked Congressman Filner how he expected to represent the Latino community given his background (Mr. Filner is Jewish and grew up in New York). As a constituent of Mr. Filner, I can attest to the fact that he has always represented all groups in his district, regardless of race, ethnic background, or religion. From his days as a Freedom Rider fighting for the civil rights of African Americans, to his work with the Filipino, Mexican American, and Kurdish communities, he has always fought for the rights of the underdog.

Conversely, as a Democrat Latina who was born and raised in Chula Vista and brought up in a Catholic family, I can say that Mr. Vargas does not represent me or my political views. I am DEEPLY offended that Vargas misleads voters into thinking that simply because he shares their same ethnic background and religion that he can count on their votes. I have much more respect for a New York-bred Jew who represents his entire district than a Latino Catholic who associates himself with crooks like the Inzunza clan and Larry Remer while selling his “community” out to insurance companies and predatory lenders. Shame on you, Juan Vargas!

No to PROPOSITION D——Third time is a harm

Here they plead again! The same political rhetoric to raise taxes because it will compromise the city’s public safety. We have heard the same song and dance with Proposition B, then Proposition S in November 2004. Now with Proposition D in June 2006.

As a National City resident, I would not be against raising taxes but with the conditions that it will be generated and actually help raise the quality of life of National City Residents. But that has not been the case with our city budget this year and previous years. In fact, our city budget is in such disarray because current public officials and previous ones keep their priorities to promote their self-interests (climbing the political ladder, please the corporate developers in the ire of the community residents, resume builders, etc). Public safety would decrease if there were more programs for the youth, a library that is open 7 days a week, a public swimming pool that is open conveniently to the public throughout the year, a lot more recreational programs for the City residents; elderly, youth and families. Instead the proponent and supporters of the proposition is misleading voters and residents that city residents will further suffer from cut-backs of recreational programs and lack of “public safety.” Mismanagement and lack of planning on previous and existing city officials are the reasons we are in the lame-duck position that they dug us into. As a resident, I would rather have a small library that is open to the public, with sufficient books and computers to use, than an exorbitant library that is a facade because it is never open that we can only enjoy it from the outside looking in. City residents do not need an aquatic center in the marina either if we cannot even keep a smaller community pool staffed and open throughout the year. Get the city resident?s priorities straight, city hall!

Time and time again, our city official representatives continue to fail us with their empty promises, lack of representation and understanding of our necessities. Enough slaps in the face. Enough is enough.
