Southwestern Teams with ACCION to Help National City Residents Set-Up Child Care Centers

Southwestern College’s (SWC) Family Resource Center (FRC) is teaming up with ACCION San Diego to assist National City residents to set up their own licensed, child care business at home.

“We are truly excited about this community partnership with the Family Resource Center,” said Patti Mason, President and CEO of ACCION San Diego, a non-profit, micro-lending loan agency. “Together, we will be providing small, home-based business owners with the training and financial support to become successful micro entrepreneurs.”

National City residents wishing to establish their own licensed child care business at home must attend a Spanish information session taking place Friday, May 26, 2006 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the Family Resource Center, 880 National City Boulevard. To reserve a space, call (619) 216-6672.

The session is part of a new Microenterprise Family Child Care Program for low income residents of National City. Priority will be given to residents from that City, but residents from other communities may also apply.

The Family Resource Center, located at SWC’s Higher Education Center at National City, will provide academic and practical child care training to residents in that city, as well as access to the comprehensive support services needed to start their own home-based, child care business. All course-work, which is taught in Spanish, and services will be free.

After participants have completed the Program and have developed a business plan, ACCION will work with them to provide start-up business loans ranging from $300 to $5,000, given that they meet required qualifications.
