For 21 years the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) San Diego Council #2842 has been recognizing and rewarding Outstanding Scholars and Achievers and this year was no exception. 80 young students representing the highest of achievement in the classroom despite difficult circumstance surrounding their young lives were recognized at the 2006 Scholarship & Educational Awards Program held at the Handlery Hotel and Resort this past June 10.
The LULAC Scholarship and Educational Awards Program works toward giving a hand to and a hand up to young, predominantly Hispanic, students from minority/low income schools as they overcome some of the barriers facing them such as language, family responsibilities, or a lack of resources that would keep most children from success. These children not only overcome the barriers in front of them but have excelled. For the high school students they will now be leaving the barrios and going to college such as Yale, UCLA, or Berkley for example.
As a role model to these young students Keynote Speaker, Ignacio De La Torre, Executive Director External Affairs, AT&T, shared his story of growing up and how his parents instilled into him the importance of an education. One of the key points of his talk was for the students to remember “don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
Setting the tone for the afternoon was the ever gracious Vic Salazar of NBC 7/39 News, who once again set a light and festive tone for the afternoon celebration.
But of course, for the students, the most exciting part was in the receiving of the awards which this year came to a grand total of $17,000. None of which could not have been possible without the generous donations from individuals, businesses, and corporations such as:
Anheuser-Bush Sales of San Diego; Macy’s; Wal Mart, Broadway in Chula Vista; American Legion Post 6; the San Diego Padres; Century 21/El Dorado Lopez Team; Blockbuster, Inc; The Men’s Wearhouse; Sims & Associates Education Services.
The William P. Dunn Memorial Scholarships; La Prensa San Diego; Rosie Cisneros/Cookie Lee Jewelry; Sally and Cliff Lowry/House & Garden Party; Zoological Society of San Diego; and many supporters and volunteers who work all year long for this event.
