Holiday Soccer Fever- Play beautiful!

By David Wyman

It’s that time of year again. The Temecula Holiday Classic Adult Soccer Tournament (TAHSC) is to be held at the John Blanche Memorial Soccer Complex on December 9th and 10th 2006. It is the second of many more to be held there annually. The Southwest Old Boys over 30 select club is primarily responsible for putting this event on. They, as well as their family members, volunteer their time collectively during the course of the year to make this tournament a great soccer weekend of fun for all. The SOB’s, as they are called, are a traveling squad who just recently in August won both the Soccer Resort 8v8 Las Vegas Classic and the Soccer Resort 8 vs. 8 San Diego tournament in the Spring for the over 30 men’s division. They will be participating in this year’s Holiday Classic in the men’s over 30 bracket, which plays 11 vs. 11. They are one of the favorites, but are up against some very good teams again this year.

Last years first tournament was a huge success with 38 teams in all. This year it is expected to be close to reach 60 teams or more. Attending this year will be some very strong teams for all the divisions, with the tournament committee’s goal of maintaining a balance of skill for all the teams. Which should make it a tough but exciting road for all to hopefully become the eventual champion. Many teams are from out of the area and some are from out of state. It is expected to be a very competitive tournament.

The tournament is comprised of a variety of divisions. With men’s and women’s open divisions being for players 18 and over. The open division is one of the most competitive divisions, with 20 teams this year, many players are local and out of town including former high school, college, semi and even some ex-professionals playing. Then there are the over 30, over 40 and over 50 men and women’s divisions and for next year the tournament will include an over 60 division too! The over 30 men’s and women’s divisions can become very competitive. Most of the over 30 players played in college or even at a semi and/ or professional level. A good number of players are coaches in the youth club circuit and recreational leagues as well as high school coaching or they referee.

Last years’ over 40 men’s champion, a team of local select youth club coaches, is expected to defend their title. This team includes several former San Diego Sockers’ players. They are a very fun team to watch and play against. The over 50 women’s champion, Ocean’s 11, will be returning, as well, to defend their title.

It is amazing to see the skill level and abilities still abundant in these categories. It is a wonderful experience to watch these people, men and women, play a game they truly love.

For the true soccer enthusiast, there really is no age limit to observe beautiful soccer. Granted a bit slower pace … but still beautiful indeed. This year will have a coed open and over 30 division with an 8v 8 format.

Tournament champions will be receiving a full set of brand new Italian-designed uniforms. There will be awards for best goalkeeper, best PK shooter and highest goal scorer. There will be a penalty kick and juggling competition, with prizes. This years sponsors include Red Bull (they will have their tent on site), Temecula Soccer Post, Chipotle Mexican Grill, All Max Nutrition, Hooters Restaurant to name a few. Temecula’s variety of attractions and hotels make for a wonderful time for all. This year’s event will be quite special and memorable for everyone.
